Zelda Foxall has been doing in-character vignettes of historically significant African American and African Women since 2008, when she co-founded the performing arts company “Cause It’s Art.” Through Zelda, these women step forward to tell their own stories of how they overcame the tremendous odds of poverty, racism, sexism and ignorance to climb to the top of their respective fields or just to step up boldly to change the way things were.
History has not recorded the significant contributions and stories of so many African American women. Of course, we know some, but like the movie “Hidden Figures” there are so many more who remain anonymous. They include “giants” like Madam C.J. Walker, a highly successful entrepreneur and philanthropist; Mae Jemison, astronaut, doctor and scientist; Josephine Baker, entertainer and civil rights activist, Bessie Coleman, aviator and pilot and many, many others.
But there are also Black African women who are giants but who remain relatively unknown. They are women who created societies that are most just, while at the same time advancing the rights of women. They are influential women like Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Miriam Makeba and – yes – Wangari Maathai.

Dr. Wangari Maathai, famous Kenyan environmentalist, women’s rights activist and 2004 Nobel Laureate, and founder of the Green Belt Movement, is stepping forward to tell her story. MAMA Seattle would like to thank our Gold sponsors: Gordon Tilden Thomas & Cordell LLP
