Protecting Speech Freedoms in a Climate of Hate

Hate crimes in Washington State increased 42% in 2017. In this current climate of increased hate, it is more important than ever to understand the legal distinction between hate speech and free speech. On March 28, 2019 The Cardozo Society and the Middle Eastern Legal Association of Washington (MELAW) were proud to present a CLE symposium, "Protecting Speech Freedoms in a Climate of Hate," examining the line between hate and free speech from a variety of legal perspectives, featuring speakers from: American Civil Liberties Union, Anti-Defamation League, Council on American-Islamic Relations, law enforcement, academia, and more. A special thanks to Davis Wright Tremaine for hosting the event.
