United Against Hate

Updated: Mar 31, 2019

It is "one of New Zealand's darkest days" – Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s Prime Minister.

In fact it is a very dark day for all of us. Our hearts are broken this morning as we learn of the horrific and saddening reports of mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand. The victims were worshipers who had gathered in a place of prayer to seek spiritual solace only to be mercilessly attacked. This is not just another shooting. It is part of a pattern of hate, antisemitism and bigotry that has targeted minority communities throughout our country and the world. However we will not allow ourselves to be desensitized by the continuous acts of hate in our world.

The light in this unimaginable chaos is our humanity – we ask you, our community, to be vigilant, to stand up against hate, to hold all who spout hateful rhetoric accountable. We all deserve to live in a world full of love, togetherness, peace, and without hate.

PLEASE do not share the video portions of the attack with others – the shooter used social media as platform to spread his hate and to seek attention: we will not allow him that benefit.

What can you do?

In the coming days, we will be sharing opportunities for you to stand up to hate and learn how you can protect yourselves and each other. For now, here are two ways you can help:

1) Donate -- Several organizations have partnered up to raise money for the victims of these attacks. Please donate here.

2) Learn -- Register for the upcoming "Protecting Speech Freedoms in a Climate of Hate" CLE on March 28, 2019 in Seattle WA here
